340B Program Expanding to Inpatient Care?

Section 340B drug pricing program discounts would be extended to the inpatient setting under a new bipartisan bill recently introduced in the House.

The 340B prescription drug discount program is available to qualified providers that serve large numbers of low-income and uninsured patients, and many private, non-profit urban safety-net hospitals qualify for this program.  Currently, the program offers discounts only for patients served on an outpatient basis, but the 340B Improvement Act of 2011, introduced by two Republicans and a Democrat, would extend section 340B prescription drug discounts to the inpatient setting  as well.
