House Members Ask Conference Committee to Protect Urban Safety-Hospitals

“Don’t cut Medicare payments to urban safety-net hospitals” – that’s the message conveyed by a letter that 38 members of the House of Representatives have sent to the congressional payroll tax conference committee.  That committee is considering a number of proposals that would increase federal spending, and in their letter, their colleagues asked them not to offset any new spending by cutting Medicare payments to urban safety-net hospitals.

The message was sponsored by Representatives Marcia Fudge (D-OH) and Judy Chu (D-CA), who circulated it among their colleagues and invited them to sign their letter before they delivered it to the conference committee members.  NAUH asked its members to contact their representatives in the House about signing the letter and even took the unusual step of contacting all private, non-profit urban safety-net hospitals, including those that do not belong to NAUH, and asking them to do the same.
