Illinois to Resume Hospitals’ Tax Status Review

Non-profit Illinois hospitals seeking property tax exemptions will have to prove to the state that they deserve those exemptions.

This comes with Governor Pat Quinn’s decision to end a moratorium on considering hospital applications for tax exemptions while the state, the hospital industry, and others attempted to negotiate what constitutes charity care and how the state would determine whether non-profit hospitals are providing enough charity care to merit tax exemptions.

This controversy began last August, when the state’s Department of Revenue rejected the application of three hospitals for exemption from property taxes, concluding that they did not do enough to earn such exemptions.
