Uninsured Rate Affects Access for the Insured

Insured residents of communities with large numbers of uninsured people often lack access to care, according to a new study.

Echoing a sentiment that urban safety-net hospitals have long understood, the study found that physicians are less likely to be interested in establishing their practices in communities with large numbers of uninsured patients.  This, in turn, affects many insured patients, leaving them less likely to have a regular health care provider, more likely to have difficulty getting the care they need, and more likely to be dissatisfied with their care.

The study was published by the journal Medical Care and was underwritten by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.  Read it hereiStock_000008112453XSmall.
