Medicare Increases Inpatient Payments

Surprise!  Medicare is giving hospitals a raise.  After proposing a 0.5 percent cut in hospital inpatient payments back in April, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has reversed course and announced that it will increase inpatient payments to hospitals by one percent in FY 2012. Medicare to Start Penalizing Hospitals for Readmissions

A new federal regulation will penalize hospitals that readmit Medicare patients within 30 days of their discharge. This change in Medicare regulations, proposed in May, will take effect in October of 2012 and is part of a broader effort by the federal government to make hospitals assume a broader role in coordinating the care of their Medicare patients.
