Does More Medicaid Mean Longer, Healthier Lives?

A new study published in the New England Journal of Medicine suggests that the residents of states that have lower barriers to Medicaid eligibility will live longer and healthier lives than those who live in states that grant eligibility only to those whose coverage is mandated by federal law.

According to the study, the mortality rate in states that expand their Medicaid programs is six percent lower than in states that do not expand their programs.

The study has been released just as many states are weighing whether to take advantage of the enhanced funding the federal government is offering in exchange for expanding their Medicaid programs as part of the Affordable Care Act.
